The story on screen
The film follows the novel: a young self-taught musician, his grandmother Mama Ruth, an eviction deadline, a producer who believes in him, a small Cleveland label with a $5,000 offer, and a Nashville hitmaker who wants his song radio-ready. It is a drama with music, in the tradition of films like 8 Mile, Hustle & Flow and Whiplash.
